Leading Municipal Signal Engineers from the State of New Jersey met in Belleville, New Jersey on December 7, 1938 for the purpose of taking action on a subject which had been under consideration for some time by the IMSA members, the formation of the New Jersey Section of IMSA. This meeting was held at the Fire Alarm Headquarters in Belleville with William E. Dunleavy, Superintendent of the Belleville, New Jersey Signal Department, as host. This meeting was the creation of a strong and progressive section of the association for the State of New Jersey. It was stated that all of the officers of the newly organized section were men who have outstanding records in their communities for the discharging of their duties and as well with this association. It was decided that the first regular meeting of the New Jersey Section would be held at Bayonne, New Jersey Fire Headquarters on Wednesday, March 1, 1939 with the newly elected Recording Secretary, Joseph A. Geiger, as host. Mr. Geiger, who was the Superintendent of Police and Fire Alarm Telegraph in Bayonne, announced that he would inform all the members well in advance of the meetings. At this meeting fifteen new applications from active members were accepted and approved. The first Pennsylvania meeting was held on Wednesday, July 10, 1940 in the City of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and was hosted by John Alles, City Electrician, City of Wilkes-Barre. At the time the New Jersey Section would be holding six meetings per year. On January 8, 1941, Jay B. Franke, City Electrician of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and 1st Vice President of IMSA hosted this meeting, one of the speakers was Clyde W. Smith of the Newark Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His talk was on the protection of signaling systems and industrial plants against sabotage and other danger which may result from any emergency conditions. Also at this meeting was a good friend of IMSA, Herbert A. Friede, who came in from Washington, D.C. Mr. Friede spoke on the National Defense Program and the important part of the Municipal Signal Engineers play in the National and Civil Defense. From 1896 through 1938 there were four IMSA Presidents from the State of New Jersey and two from the State of Pennsylvania. From 1938 through today, there were seven Presidents and one Chairman of the Board from the New Jersey Section. The New Jersey Section area was a popular place for National Conferences; there were fourteen held in this area. - Carmine Guagenti - Secretary / Treasurer |
